Society of Lady Captains of Kent Golf Clubs
SIVERWARE:
THE ARMADA DISHES:
PRESENTED BY MISS N K HOLLAND 1961
THE HISTORICAL DISHES
Silver taken from the Spanish Armada presented to Sir Christopher Harris for services rendered was later used to complete an Elizabethan banqueting service consisting of twenty-two dishes and plates, each formed as a shallow bowl and lightly raised centre, a flat rim with reeded border bearing the engraved cost of arms of Sir Christopher Harris.
The dishes also bore the London Hallmark for the years 1581,1599,1600 and 1601. About the year 1645 the service was buried in a field adjoining “Dartmoor” in order to avoid seizure by Parliamentary troops, as the owner at that period held a command in the Royal Forces of Plymouth.
The reproduction of the original dish with its staggered hallmark, typical of the period, offers an attractive and tasteful item of silver and a further reminder of the great history and traditions of our country.
The genuine information above has been obtained from the catalogue issued at the time the original banqueting service was auctioned in 1911 by – Messrs. Christie Manson & Woods Limited.
The dishes are awarded for the best score of the day at the Spring and Autumn Meetings.
