The formation of the Society of Lady Captains of Kent Golf Clubs resulted from a conversation between Miss Dorothy Lammin and Mrs Ursula Urquhart, at a Pearson Trophy match between Littlestone Golf Club and Rochester and Cobham Park Golf Club, at Cobham, in 1960.
Mrs Urquhart was lamenting the fact that Cobham was three miles outside the boundary of the area covered by the Society of London Lady Golf Captains. Miss Lammin then had the splendid idea of starting a similar society in Kent.
Miss Wanda Morgan was contacted and full of enthusiasm the three ladies met at ‘The Ship’ in Faversham to discuss the proposition, with the result that the Society began to be formulated that day. Miss Lammin felt, “It would be pleasant to have some social golf meetings where we can meet our many friends and acquaintances throughout the County.”
It was decided that Miss Norah Holland, (Past Captain of Folkestone and Littlestone Golf Clubs) should be invited to be the first Captain, Miss Wanda Morgan, (Past Captain of Rochester and Cobham Park Golf Club to be President, Mrs Ursula Urquhart, (Captain of Rochester and Cobham Park Golf Club and a member of the Kent County Committee, to be Honorary Secretary and Miss Dorothy Lammin, (Past Captain of Folkestone and Littlestone Golf Clubs) to be Honorary Treasurer.
In November 1960, the idea of the Society was submitted at the Kent County Ladies Golf Association Annual General Meeting and was given their blessing. Mrs Urquhart then contacted clubs throughout the County to find out if their Past and Present Captains were interested in being members of a society which would meet for luncheon, and would hold two golf meetings annually. She received 243 positive replies to this proposal. Six ladies were invited and co-opted to serve on the Committee from various parts of the County.
Prior to the first Committee Meeting the Founder Members had several meetings. The title of the society was decided and was to be, The Society of Lady Captains of Kent Golf Clubs. Later it was often unofficially referred to as, “Lammin’s Lovely Ladies”!
